A region rich in culture and folklore, you may still see traditional Breton costume and lace headresses being worn. Brittany’s medieval past can best be discovered at Quimper, its ancient capital. Close to the sea, Carnac is famous for its prehistoric standing stones and, to the east, lies the Gulf of Morbihan, an inland sea scattered with tiny islands offering some of the most beautiful scenery in Brittany. Soft golden sandy beaches and calm waters fringe the coastline from Carnac to La Baule, known as Brittany’s St Tropez.
Places to see
Concarneau - Within the huge walls of this impressive fortified town, built on an island, are pretty cobbled streets lined with old houses, shops and crêperies.
Auray - This medieval river port is a maze of cobbled streets. Once a week the town is engulfed in a colourful market.
Locronan - A perfectly preserved medieval Breton village, with many craft workshops set around the cobbled Renaissance square.
Quimper - The old capital of Finistère is a picturesque riverside town with a 13th century cathedral, and a maze of cobbled streets and ancient half-timbered houses.
Beg-Meil - A ferry crosses the Baie de la Forêt and you can take trips up the River Odet.
Pont Aven - A pretty riverside village, popular with artists since the 19th century, where some of Gauguin’s work may be seen.
Pont l’Abbé - A busy market town with an old castle. Here you may still see local women wearing traditional costume.
Pointe-du-Raz - Reminiscent of the Cornish coast, enjoy the panoramic views and dramatic rock formations along the coast.
Josselin - A delightful little town with a lovely fairytale château in idyllic surroundings.
Carnac - Visit the 3,000 prehistoric stones which run for just over two miles. The mystery remains as to how these stones were placed in lines with such precision.
Quiberon - A lively and popular resort with a huge sandy beach. Along the harbour are some superb seafood restaurants.
Belle Ile - Take a boat trip to the largest and most beautiful of the islands by the Gulf of Morbihan, a favourite haunt of the actress Sarah Bernhardt. The rugged coastline is dotted with harbours, traditional Breton houses and pretty sandy coves.
